Puerto Escondido is a small fishing village on the Pacific, located in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca. In the heart of the fishing port, a “sirena” or mermaid, graces the small bay. I enjoy imagery of mermaids for their mysteriousness, poise, connection to the sea, and strength. I also don’t mind that the statue has withered and chipped away with time; this is the essence of the rustic town that envelops it.
